The Bahamas Maritime Authority was pleased to host the Bahamian Minister for Transport and Housing, Hon. JoBeth Coleby-Davis, in London. The Minister led The Bahamas delegation in a series of bi-lateral meetings with representatives from a number of member states of the IMO. The visit was the Minister’s second to London this year and highlights the importance of the maritime sector to The Bahamas.
On the final day of her visit, Minister Coleby-Davis represented The Bahamas at the IMO Global Conference marking the second IMO International Day for Women in Maritime. Here she spoke about the importance of educating women about the openings that exist in shipping and then giving them the opportunity to study for those roles. She also stressed the need to subsequently demonstrate publicly that they are valued by the industry for the work they do. She later went on to speak of the lifestyle that women can achieve working in maritime and the economic benefits and personal satisfaction that come from a career in the sector.
BMA Managing Director and CEO Capt Dwain Hutchinson, said: “It was a great pleasure to welcome the Minister and accompany her during meetings with many of our fellow IMO member states. We were particularly pleased that she was selected to speak at the IMO at the end of what was a fruitful and busy visit.”
